This paper is an edited, transcribed version of the 14th chapter of Edith Kramer’s book entitled Art as
Therapy, published by Athenaeum Press, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, Great Britain; 2000; the author reflected
on concepts with regard to the evolution of human perceptions, as well as of samples from mentally ill patients,
for a greater understanding of the visual arts and the visual products of art therapy. Ideas represented through
the combined theoretical study of etiology and psychoanalysis encompassing supernormal configurations, the
signal, symbol and recall of visual objects; and the innate response were developed for the broader under-
standing of mental processes and human behavior.
