The Factors that Maintenance Lanna Traditional Wisdom in Protection of
the Symptoms in Postpartum Period (Pid-Duen) Case Studies from Mae
Khao Tom Subdistrict, Muang district, Chiangrai Province.

Rationale: Following the policy of National Health Security Office (NHSO) that promote the
using of Thai traditional wisdom practices in postpartum health care hospitals, found that the postpar-
tum practices following plan of National Health Security Office (NHSO) is Thai traditional wisdom in
the central region of Thailand. It is not accord to the wisdom path in other regions. In each region has
the beliefs and practices differently. It influences to choosing the wisdom in self-caring such as in
upper north of Thailand that called çLannaé has own belief and practices about symptoms after delivery
that called çPid-Duené. It is self-knowledge that inherit from the ancient. It can changes follow the
periods and it is not written. It should be explored and collected for conserve good practices and reduce
risks that may affect to mother health.
Objective: The studied population is seven postpartum women that using Lanna traditional
wisdom in postpartum self-care, has child ages 0-2 years and living in Mae Khao Tom, subdistrict
Muang, Chiangrai province.
Methodology: The participants were that chose by Thai traditional medicine doctor of Mae Khao
Tom health promoting hospital. Collect the data by using focus group discussion and in-depth inter-
view
Results: Postpartum women in Mae Khao Tom subdistrict, Muang district, Chiangrai province
were using Lanna traditional wisdom for protect the symptoms in postpartum period that called çPid
duené. Some wisdom were practiced seriously and some wisdom were practiced some part, adapt or
diminish to according their life. The knowledge about health in the present influences to the the
maintenance of wisdom and deciding to using the wisdom. Moreover we found that the traditional
wisdom for protect the symptoms in postpartum period that called çPid duené were emphasized from
postpartum women. They try to practice to protect themselves from the symptoms that can be found in
the future. And found that some participants were confusing in some traditional wisdom practice with
the knowledge in modern medicine.
Conclusion: In the present, even the situation were changing but wisdom using were still alive.
Main factor of traditional using is having the knowledgeable people in caring. Supporting factors are
having the resources that use in mother health care in the area and fearing about the following
symptoms if donût practice following the wisdom. These reasons can assist the health profession to plan
to study continually to give clearly knowledge to the people and promote the traditional practice using
in health care system.
